Industrial safety devices are equipments that are used in the protection of the entire system against accidents or high electric current. Due to the increased level of safety awareness in industries, the need to have safety devices has been increased. Not only do the devices protect the systems, they’re also used as extra measures in protecting employees when all the necessary safety measures have been applied in a workplace. These devices have been used in many applications and fields and in return they have highly reduced man power and loss of both lives and cost. Different types of safety devices are used in different applications depending on the task they’re subjected to. These devices can be in forms of switches, sheathes, relays and light barriers.

These devices are grouped and classified according to their safety standards and classes. Some employ the international safety standards while some employ the US based safety standards. The international safety standards govern the entire group of safety devices while the US standards normally govern any devices manufactured and used in the US. In terms of classes, these safety devices can be grouped into 5 different classes depending on the level of urgency and use. These classes are Class O, Class I, Class 0I, Class II and Class III.

Safety devices are virtually placed and available in many industrial and manufacturing plants. Depending on their task, these devices can be manually operated either by handles and buttons or automatically operated by an electric current. Examples of manually controlled devices are such as foot switches and rotary switches. On the other hand, automatically controlled devices can be such as transformer protection relays and digital protection relays which don’t require any human hand for them to function.

Just like in another type of device, it’s always important to consider certain factors before choosing a safety device. The most common factors you should consider are such as job suitability, accessibility, price and availability. As stated earlier, different devices act on different tasks. For example if you are considering a circuit breaker device, you should go for safety switches which will perfectly function by preventing electric shock to your devices or electrical appliances. Regulation and compliancy are also important factors to consider. Devices which are compliant with regulators are usually marked with a CE label. It’s important to choose safety devices that are fully compliant with different legislation bodies so to avoid accidents caused by poorly constructed safety devices.

In industries where large objects or machineries are moved from one place to another safety devices have found their importance. In such environments, safety light barriers are used. These barriers help in indicating the safest distance between the user and the machinery. This highly prevents accidents and unwanted measuring or estimation. Examples of safety light barriers are such as retro-reflective and multi-beam light barriers.

Naked cables and wires can also have a hazardous effect especially when they come in contact with water or other naked wires. This is where the safety devices step in. In such situations, devices such as cable glands and cable protection conduits are highly preferred and used.
